With the event of mixed martial arts (MMA) becoming mainstream in the media, more and more people are looking to martial arts and self-defense classes as an alternative to the usual gym and fitness routine. At The Dojo, we have been training in and teaching martial arts long before the media hype. We proudly bring forth this tradition to new generations of martial artists by offering a variety of classes to our students.
The The Dojo martial arts curriculum provides a great way for adults to stay in shape. It won’t become dull or routine because as soon as you get better and continue learning, there are always more challenges ahead to keep you inspired and coming back for more!
Karate-do is taught at The Dojo. Karate-do is the ancient martial art of Okinawa. The name Karate-Do means the "way of the empty hand" and is intended to express the skill and humility of the Karate practitioner. In particular, Shorin-Ryu Karate-do translates as the small forest way of the empty hand style, referring to the fighting arts developed at China's small forest temple or Shaolin Temple.
Iaido is the art of reacting to a surprise attack by counter attacking with renown Japanese the sword. An in-depth reading of the Japanese characters for iaido is: I = being, AI = harmony, DO = way . "The way of harmonizing oneself in action.
Iaido-ka practice to prepare for a surprise attack, where an immediate, efficient solution to the problem of aggression is necessary. Therefore, the technique is highly refined. Every unnecessary movement is cut away. The technique is simple and direct. The training method is aimed towards development of the practitioner’s every mental and physical resource.
This traditional Kobudo class emphasizes proper technique, focus, concentration, and respect when using the weapons.
Rank in Kobudo is separate from the Karate rank. Frank Hargrove teaches real koryu Ryukyu Kobudo that is used against the Japanese Samurai sword, not the weak display Kobudo taught by most karate schools to display the Ryukyu Kobudo weapons.
Each weapon is used to develop combat techniques against a swordsman who knows how to use the sword. This requires that every student also learn the shoden level of Muso Zenshin-Ryu Kenjitsu.
